Storing Medical Equipment
If you have a chronic medical condition such as diabetes, stocking up on medical supplies is never a bad idea. Make sure you take some basic safety into account when you do store these items, however.
First, make sure you read the labels for information about how the medical equipment is supposed to be stored. The temperature requirements have to be followed exactly for any medical equipment to be stored safely. If you’re storing extra equipment in a property that you only use part time, such as at a cabin or vacation house, you’ll want to make sure that anything that could freeze isn’t left there over the winter.
Dates are vital information about any medical supplies. There is no situation where it’s safe to use medical devices after they have expired. The rules are the same as they are for medications. If something gets out of date, throw it away immediately. This will prevent you from using expired supplies by accent.
There are some very rare cases where you may find that medical supplies have the Julian date on them. Most of them will have the standard date on them, as well, so that patients have an easy time determining when they are expired. If you do see a medical supply without the standard format date printed on it, just assume that it is expired. If there is another date listed in a different system on the supply, it’s likely that the original date in the standard format was worn off somehow.
Some equipment will be fragile. When you store this equipment, make sure you label it so that nobody moves it so hard that they accidentally break it while it’s in storage. Any equipment that’s sharp or otherwise dangerous has to be locked up out of the reach of anyone who might harm themselves. Remember to purchase the right equipment to dispose of these supplies, as well. Sharps containers allow you to dispose of needles and other medical equipment that could injure somebody without putting them at risk. If you don’t have any of these containers on hand, it’s not safe to get rid of medical equipment. Check with your local municipality to determine the correct procedure for disposing of used medical equipment in the garbage.
Storing your medical supplies so that you have a good reserve of them on hand is a smart idea. Just make certain that you do it correctly so that you avoid any problems.
