Causes of Incontinence and Products Used to Alleviate the Problem

There are a number of health conditions that cause the symptom known as incontinence. Disorders such as spina bifida, strokes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, enlarged prostate in men, and polyuria (excessive production of urine) can all lead to incontinence. There are effective treatments available in many cases. There are also a number of medical products available that help to alleviate or diminish the problem.

For disorders that cause reduced bladder muscle control, products such as catheters are often prescribed by a health care professional. Catheters are tubes that are inserted into the urethra in order to drain urine properly. Individuals who are mobile and have limited control of their bladder often use intermittent catheters. These devices are small and can be carried discreetly while traveling away from home, and do not require medical assistance to use. Other types of catheters are inserted on a longer-term basis by health care professionals for individuals who have complete loss of bladder control. (more…)
