How Blood Glucose Monitors Work

Diabetes can be a serious illness, but it can also be one that you have a good deal of control over; namely by monitoring your blood glucose levels, and trying to keep them in a normal range.  Using blood glucose monitors at home is a good way to track your blood sugar.  By using these monitors several times a day you will be able to see how certain foods affect your blood sugar and can better monitor what you eat by what effects you personally.  This means you can make better day-to-day choices and see improvement.

Monitors usually work by using a lancet to poke the finger and then placing a drop of blood on a test strip.  The small machine then reads the amount of glucose in the bloodstream.  Some write down what they ate and a basic idea of what they did that day and record their numbers so that they can find patterns.  Do carbohydrates really affect you?  Can a simple walk help to bring those numbers back into a normal range?  Do you need to use less insulin?  By using blood glucose monitors frequently, you can start to see what works for you.
