Taking Care of Incontinence Problems

Those who suffer from incontinence know that it can be a very difficult problem.  Millions of people suffer from incontinence, yet it is not often talked about because it is an embarrassing situation.  There are many products that are available to help you discretely deal with the problem.

There are different reasons that people suffer from incontinence.  In many cases, the muscles that help to hold in urine have declined either due to old age or after having had children.  These muscles can often be strengthened by doing some pelvic floor exercises.  This is most helpful in people who have minor urinary problems, such as leaking urine when coughing or laughing.

Your doctor may recommend that you get some simple surgery to help the problem.  This surgery is successful in reducing urine leakage in many people.  Older individuals may not be candidates for this type of surgery.  There are some ways to live with the situation, making it much more tolerable.

For some people, the only time they have trouble with incontinence is during the night.  As we age, we often have the need to urinate more frequently.  If you are a heavy sleeper, you may end up with wet sheets.  There are some things you can do to help the situation.  Start by using a special mattress cover that will stop leakage onto the mattress.  Waterproof bed pads are essential in keeping dry overnight.  You can simply place the pads in place under or over your sheet to absorb any liquid.

Whether you have a minor leakage problem or a more severe incontinence problem you may have difficulty getting out of the house.  To help you become more mobile, consider wearing urinary protective underwear.  These products are designed to hold liquid discretely.  They don’t show under clothing and protect you from accidents.  These adult diapers come in a variety of styles and sizes and are available for both men and women.  Choose lightweight styles for daytime wear and heavier styles for nighttime wear if needed.

Along with using adult diapers you can use disposable washcloths.  The washcloths are similar to baby wipes.  They provide a quick and easy way to clean up after yourself.  The washcloths can be discreetly carried in your purse, making them easy to use when needed.  Another option is to use an odor eliminating spray that reduces any odors associated with urine that may be found on clothing or on bedding.
